A Japanese platoon pose proudly with various items of Soviet army weaponry and equipment captured in an engagement. Their haul includes a Soviet DT tank machine gun which has been dismounted for use as an infantry gun. Behind the man with the machine gun another soldier rather bizarrely sports a captured Soviet army gas mask. On the right-hand side of the photograph are a couple of tank crewmen wearing overalls with their M32 helmets. In the centre of the group a soldier wears spectacles, which was a common sight in the army with the higher level of short-sightedness, or ‘myopia’, in the Japanese population. When the war began recruits with myopia were classed as B1 and were generally not enlisted. As the war intensified after 1941 classes B1–B3 were enlisted as the high level of casualties led to a reduction in recruiting standards.
